The Imo State Health Insurance Agency under the leadership of the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Uchenna Ewelike, has reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to quality and inclusive healthcare as the Governor Hope Uzodimma Health Insurance Programme commences major eye surgeries for pensioners and dependants at the IMSU Medical Centre, Owerri.
During an interface with the beneficiaries ahead of their scheduled procedures on Thursday, 24th October 2025, Dr. Ewelike disclosed that the surgeries will be performed by world-class ophthalmologists and surgeons, carefully selected to deliver quality service. He further revealed that this marks the 7th phase of the Eye Surgery Intervention Drive while noting that no mortality has been recorded.
The Thoroughbred Health Economist, Dr Ewelike, stated that about 46 patients have been captured for the current round of surgeries as he described the eye care intervention drive under the Governor’s Health Insurance Programme as an example of “bulk health purchasing” in health economics, a strategic approach for procuring high quality healthcare services at scale for targeted groups based on pooled resources, thereby ensuring efficiency, equity, and measurable impact.
Dr. Ewelike also noted that the Health Insurance Programme for Pensioners was thoughtfully designed by the State Government with the intent to support those who diligently served the state during their active years, and who now belong to the dependent and vulnerable population in their retirement age.
He commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for demonstrating uncommon empathy and foresight through policies that prioritize the welfare of senior citizens and other vulnerable groups.
The surgeries, fully funded under the Governor Hope Uzodimma Health Insurance Programme, are being carried out at the IMSU Medical Centre, Owerri, by a top-tier medical team as part of the broader ImoCare Health Insurance Drive towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Imo State.
