The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Imo State Branch, has conferred its prestigious “Great Ambassador of NMA” award on the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Chioma Vivian Egu, and the Executive Secretary of the Imo State Health Insurance Agency (IMSHIA), Dr. Uchenna Ewelike, during its Annual General Meeting held on 17th August 2025.
The State Chairman of NMA Imo State Branch, Dr. Echeta B. U., described the honour as a recognition of the outstanding contributions of Dr. (Mrs) Chioma Vivian Egu, the Honourable Commissioner of Health and the Dr Uchenna Ewelike, the Executive Secretary/CEO of IMSHIA to the advancement of healthcare delivery and their unwavering support to the Association.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. (Mrs) Chioma Egu expressed gratitude to the leadership of NMA for the recognition, pledging to remain steadfast in drive to improve the Imo State health sector. She further urged Members of the Association to strengthen internal unity and actively participate in politics to ensure the Medical Profession continues to shape healthcare policies.
Also in response, Dr. Uchenna Ewelike, the Executive Secretary/CEO of Imo State Health Insurance Agency, commended NMA Imo State for identifying and celebrating Members who are driving positive change in the state’s health system. He noted that IMSHIA considers the honour as a motivation to do more work in ensuring healthcare access for Imo residents.
Highlighting recent achievements, Dr. Ewelike revealed that IMSHIA has successfully enrolled all civil servants, pensioners, and vulnerable groups particularly pregnant women and children under five into the State Health Insurance Scheme. According to him, this intervention has significantly reduced maternal mortality in Imo State and reinforced the agency’s commitment to universal health coverage.
The event was graced by distinguished Members of the Nigerian Medical Association, friends and well-wishers, who applauded and poured encomiums on the Awardees for their dedication, impact, and visionary leadership in advancing healthcare for the people of Imo State.
